UFCT President: Special Session

Dear Colleagues:

As I am sure you are aware, the special session called by Governor Edwards began a few days ago.  And for those of you who follow political activities, the predictable pushing and shoving between the political parties (and various special interest groups) is on full display.  (Such is the nature of politics.)

Without belaboring all of that in this message, I simply want to let you know that the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, with which the UFCT is affiliated, is actively involved in monitoring and supporting our welfare during this special session.  While it is impossible to tell what will ultimately come to pass when the session ends, I know that Steve and his staff will do all in their power to do what is best for us in higher education.  And it is clear, given the seriousness of the budgetary problems we are facing, the task faced by the governor and legislators is neither simple nor easy.

I want to urge you and your colleagues to take an active hand during this session.  You can do so by contacting your legislators when special pieces of legislation are presented for a vote.  Furthermore, it may necessitate participating in public demonstrations on the steps of the capitol in support of favorable legislation for us in higher education.  (The LFT's web site will keep you informed about pending legislation during the session and/or about any public demonstrations.)

As always, I want to thank you for your continued membership in the UFCT and for the work you do on your campus on behalf of all of our colleagues, including both members and non-members of the UFCT.

Sincerely, Bob Lawyer, President, UFCT
